How is HempWood® Natural Flooring Made?
The process of creating HempWood® Natural Flooring starts in the field. All hemp is sourced within 100 miles of the factory from local farmers. After the hemp is collected, a plant-based adhesive is used to bind full-length fiber hemp stalks. After the hemp stalks and plant-based adhesive are combined, the material is compressed and baked to form HempWood® Blocks.
From the Blocks, 4mm HempWood® veneers are cut for the top layer of the engineered flooring.
For the substrate, a 5-layer PureBound® Hardwood Plywood is used. The plywood is ethically sourced from Columbia Forest Products, which is located in West Virginia. By using PureBound® Plywood, we are able to maintain our eco-friendly mission and support the American economy.
After cutting the veneers and ripping the plywood, our flooring is assembled with the help of our PUR glue line. After adhering the HempWood® veneer to the Purebond® Plywood, a tongue and groove profile is cut into the flooring.
The boards are then sanded, finished, and surveyed for any blemishes. Our quality control team hand checks each board and ensures that our flooring upholds our standard of hardness, durability, and beauty.
NISHA DESIGNS REPRESENTS HEMP WOOD FLOORING. MADE IN USA

The home design industry is raring to go. After a long pause due to the pandemic, people are hungry for fresh ideas and industry change. At a recent online event, the Heimtextil Trend Council presented its 2022-23 trend predictions for home textiles. The forecast offers a taste of what will be exhibited in January 2022 at the Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany.
The pandemic has highlighted the importance of a comfortable and beautifully decorated home. Textiles play a part, but sustainability is also important. One thing is clear: More of the same is not an option.
Hemp fiber could be a material for the future. Used in antiquity, hemp is easy to cultivate and maintain, grows quickly, is resistant to pests, uses far less water than cotton and produces more biomass than most other cultivated species. All photos by SPOTT for Heimtextil.
The First Steps Are Not Enough
“Sustainability is no longer a choice or a desirable add-on, it’s an absolute imperative,” says Caroline Till of London studio Franklin Till. “The detrimental impact that we’re making on the planet is abundantly clear. So, for individuals, brands and manufacturers alike, having a clear approach to sustainability is of paramount importance.”
And mass production? “We are in a period of transformation,” says Anja Bisgaard Gaede of Spott Trends & Business from Denmark. Bisgaard Gaede, along with Franklin Till and the Stiljinstitut Amsterdam, represented by Anne Marie Commandeur, was part of the trend council that researched and presented the new trends for Heimtextil.
Textile design without chemicals is possible, thanks to natural dyes, sustainable printing, sun printing and digital printing as in this example from VIA University College in Denmark.
“We do still have large-scale production, which we need to change to a more sustainable path. We are looking into serving you … the continued push to do so and the continued inspiration for how to do so,” Bisgaard Gaede says.
“This generation of emerging designers is inviting us to challenge the mainstream discourse surrounding the climate emergency,” Till says. “They’re offering innovative, impactful ideas that align with their strong sense of environmental and social values.”
Sustainable textiles do not need to come in earthy colors. Pictured is fabric made out of patterned offcuts and raffia palm ribbon by Christina Engsig.
Radical Thinking
The trend council makes it clear that for a product to be sustainable, it is no longer sufficient to just stick an eco label on it. “We need to think radically differently about production today,” says Bisgaard Gaede. “The future of home textiles is really understanding nature’s intelligent system. … In order to not create imbalances, we need to learn how nature actually balances itself.”
Till presents two possible approaches: “to either retain naturally derived materials within the biological cycle and let them degrade, or utilize only synthetic materials that can be retained wholly in the technical cycle, within infinite loops.”
“The future of objects should simply not create waste or imbalance,” as the trend council’s video statement put it.
Biodegradable textiles out of mycelium, animal innards or agricultural waste, or bacteria that dye textiles naturally, are some examples raised in the presentation. An emphasis on traditional craftsmanship can also fuel a sustainable shift.
The cloth of the future is responsive. This means it can react and adapt to the environment and the body. Or materials can come into contact with the natural world virtually, through augmented reality. Pictured is reflective textile design from VIA University College.
“In the Western world our disconnection from nature has brought us to this state of ecological imbalance,” Till says. “But we can look to technology to provide a lens to help deepen and strengthen our connection to the natural world.”
Till sees the future in innovative production processes as well as in digital economic goods: products that are not physically present, and which we experience virtually through augmented reality. “People are actually willing to engage and spend large amounts of money — whether it be design pieces for the home or indeed fashion items — that house a virtual space or dress a digital avatar,” she says. “This is … exploring a future in which we … look to fulfill our sense of creativity and our desire to consume within the virtual realm.”
The material in this photo was dyed with onion skins and avocado pits. There is ongoing research into the viability of these methods for mass production.
New Materials for a World Worth Living In
The four trend themes — Deep Nature, Hyper Nature, Beyond Identity and Empowered Identity — are united by one basic thought: They show how the industry can use resources more responsibly in future.
How will this lead to the fabrics of the future, and what might these look like? Here is an overview of the most important colors, materials and technologies for the coming season, put together by the Heimtextil Trend Council.

What eco-friendly materials are best for your rug?
As pollution indoors can be higher than pollution outdoors due to toxic gases emitted from the furniture and floor coverings, we should consider carefully what materials are used in the production of our furniture as well as rugs. Rugs that are made of natural fibers are not synthetic or chemically treated and they are derived from plants. Many of them are also made with renewable resources. Some of the most environmentally friendly rug materials are wool, cotton, hemp, jute, bamboo and a few others.
When considering what rug material is right for your home, wool definitely occupies an important place. It is a natural material that we get from sheep and goats. When choosing a wool rug, mind the fact whether there were chemicals added in coloring or preservation of the wool. When compared to the aspect of durability, wool rugs are much more durable than rugs made of synthetic fibers. It is definitely one of the best choices you can make. Another thing that makes wool perfect is its resistance to stains. Due to organic coating, every fiber is covered in, it is able to repel both water and all kinds of stains. Wool fibers are in curly shape, which makes them difficult for wearing the pile down. So, a wool carpet is a perfect option for heavy traffic areas in your home. Other advantages of wool include the fact that it’s hypoallergenic, it purifies the air and it doesn’t allow for mildew to develop. It also naturally insulates your home and provides warmth. Wool rugs come in many colors, patterns, and sizes.
Cotton is a material that is characterized by sustainability, renewability and biodegradability. It is also less expensive than the previously mentioned wool. Cotton is a highly popular, durable, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic material. All of these characteristics make it the biggest natural fiber that satisfies our textile needs. You can often find combinations of wool and cotton for a more affordable rug alternative. They can be manufactured in many different colors and they hold on to their color for quite a long time. If you’re looking for new, eco-friendly rug alternatives, check out companies such as Click Rugs as they offer quite a wide range of different rug materials, colors, purpose, style and rugs originating from different countries.
Hemps is yet another natural material that is also hypoallergenic and it’s non-irritating for our skin. What’s more, it’s naturally pest-resistant and requires little water during it’s growing period. We get hemp from hemp grass (mount grass) that grows in the highlands of China. As a material, hemp is quite soft and flexible. Its natural colors vary from a variety of warm, tan shades. The process of spinning hemp into yarn cords requires little processing.
One of the most environmentally friendly materials in the world is surely jute. It is derived from a tropical plant and it’s characterized by durability and the ability to be biodegradable and recyclable. Jute fibers are multi-purposeful and are used to make rugs, mats, hessian bags and twine. Another name for jute is the golden fiber as its color varies from off-white and brown. It is just behind cotton when talking about popularity as a textile material. Most of the jute rugs come in natural shades but they can also be dyed in different colors. Colors can vary from the more natural hues to the ones that are bolder and their aim is to accentuate.
Bamboo is a durable, eco-friendly and high-quality material used for the production of rugs, clothes, furniture and a lot of other things. As a plant, bamboo is highly renewable and bamboo forests can be grown in a matter of years. It also doesn’t require many resources for its growth. So, it definitely satisfies our eco-friendly standards. Bamboo as a rug material is both strong and soft and it makes any rug practical and comfy. Bamboo rugs breathe nature with their colors and patterns. They usually come in many shades of brown and green.
Seagrass as a rug material is a material that’s durable, easy to clean and eco-friendly. In many cases, seagrass is not dyed but is simply left in colors as it is. Natural colors of seagrass include shades from khaki tan to sage green. Another feature of seagrass is that it’s stain-resistant due to natural wax on each fiber, which prevents dirt from settling in.
When speaking about materials that are sustainable, durable, biodegradable, stain-resistant and eco-friendly – sisal occupies an important place. Around 1000 fibers are produced from a single sisal leaf. It is a material that’s affordable and naturally insulated, which helps you in controlling your heating and cooling energy consumption. Sisal is easily dyed and bleached, so it comes in many diverse colors.REPORT THIS AD
